That One Time we Released Our Manifesto
July 13 2015
The name One Time in Moab comes from my days as an undergraduate at Colorado College. As was befitting an institution at the base of the Rockies, the student body would scurry off to the nearest ski hill, backcountry hut, or national park to get their fill of nature at every opportunity. These trips almost inevitably involved a campfire. By and large, the favorite topic around most campfires were other trips involving other campfires.
“One time in Zion we saw a group of forty tourists photographing us as we climbed.”
“One time in Chicago Basin our tent flooded right before a big snow and ice froze our sleeping bags to the ground.”
“One time in Crested Butte my buddy did the pond skim in a wedding dress.”
“One time in Moab I fell out of my raft in thirty five degree weather.”
There are millions of people with millions more of these stories. They range from cute to hilarious to harrowing. They can be ten seconds or two hours long. I dedicate this website to the people who tell these stories - the people who know that life is lived better above the dirt and under the sky- the weekend warriors, dirtbags, and aspiring Sir Edmund Hillarys who are eternally searching for one more arrow in their quiver of outdoor tales.
I started One Time in Moab because I want the world to have more campfire stories. If our content is something you want to talk about while sitting in a camping chair and making s’mores, than we’ve succeeded. As you, the reader, may have noticed, my writing staff and I aren’t exactly professional athletes, but we love what we do. We probably won’t be going where nobody’s ever gone before before very soon. However, we’ll be going where we haven’t gone before, and we’re going to do our damnedest to make it interesting.
I also invite you, the reader, to submit your stories to us. I suspect every person who reads this website has somewhere that they absolutely need to go, whether it’s a summit, a remote campsite, a ski descent, or the top of a tough climbing route. Join us as we get there together. Afterwards, let’s tell the story of what happened on the way.
Love,
Patrick Lapera
